About Sergio C. Garcia
Sergio Covarrubias Garcia was born on March 1, 1977, to Salvador Covarrubias and Albertina Garcia in the State of Michoacán, Mexico. At the age of 17 months, he was brought to the United States by his parents. After about 8 years, his family decided to move back to Mexico. By that time, Sergio had forgotten to speak Spanish.
When he was about 10 years old, Sergio decided to become an attorney as a result of being exposed to the unjust criminal justice system of his country. In Mexico, Sergio has been involved in school academic contests, was school president, and graduated from the equivalent to junior high with the highest honors.
Soon after, his life took an unexpected turn. His father decided to bring Sergio and all his family back to the United States, a decision that Sergio did not like. Coming to the U.S. meant starting all over again. On November 18, 1994, his father applied to adjust Sergio’s legal status, and his application was approved on January 15, 1995.
Once back in the United States, Sergio went to Durham High School and graduated with several awards. At that point, he had captured the attention of prestigious institutions: Stanford, Berkeley, UC Davis, and others. Sadly, he was forced to decline offers from these institutions since he was still in the process of adjusting his status and therefore did not qualify for the scholarships these institutions offered.
Instead, Sergio continued his education at Butte College where he obtained AA degrees in Social and Behavioral Sciences and AS in Business Administration. After Butte College, Sergio transferred to Chico State University where he successfully completed the Paralegal Certificate Program in 2005.
Later, he enrolled in Cal Northern School of Law. The access to a part-time program allowed him to continue working full time during the day while attending school at night.
Sergio successfully graduated from law school with a Juris Doctorate on May 9, 2009, a degree that he dedicated to his mother on mother's day.
On November 21, 2009, Sergio successfully passed the California Bar Exam on his first attempt but following an extended and grueling investigation, he was denied a license solely on the basis of his lack of immigration status which had been in process for more than 15 years at that point.
After battling the U.S Department of Justice for almost 5 years, Mr. Garcia won his landmark case making him the first undocumented person in the nation, in the history of our nation, to be authorized to practice law while undocumented. Mr. Garcia was sworn in as the nation’s first undocumented attorney on February 1, 2014, on the steps of the Capitol building in California. Mr. Garcia was surrounded by friends, family, and members of the local, national and international press.
The following Monday, Mr. Garcia opened The Law Offices of Sergio C. Garcia with a laptop, a printer, and his cell phone. He also founded The Sergio C. Garcia Foundation devoted to helping students complete their education independently of their background or status.
The following year, Mr. Garcia finally received his green card on May 20, 2015. He immediately traveled to his place of birth, Villa Jimenez, in the poor state of Michoacán, where he made a donation to his former school and gave several motivational speeches to several institutions.
On October 1, 2015, Mr. Garcia married Amairani L. Serna and continued working hard as an attorney and motivational speaker. In 2016, Mr. Garcia and his wife purchased the building his company occupies, and in 2018, The Law Offices of Sergio C. Garcia became SCG Professional Law Corporation.
That same year, Mr. Garcia and his wife purchased their dream home in the City of Chico, California, and added Drake to the family, their beloved Pomeranian. Despite the 2020 pandemic, Mr. Garcia’s corporation continued to thrive paying in excess of $200,000.00 dollars in taxes that year and making multiple donations to those in need.
By 2021, Mr. Garcia had consolidated himself as one of the most recognizable and well-respected personal injury attorneys in Northern California and the entire state. He currently serves clients all over the state and the nation whenever tragedy strikes. His corporation has recently purchased the adjacent property in hopes of one day increasing its size and ability to help those in need and who are vulnerable and underrepresented.
Mr. Garcia spends his time leading his corporation, helping those in need, and traveling worldwide especially to those nations where his wife and he can help others.
